Colour All the Way Through — Not a Coating

A coloured concrete driveway is not painted or stained on top. Iron oxide pigments are measured and mixed into the concrete itself before the pour, so the colour runs through the full depth of the slab. If the surface ever chips or cracks, the same colour appears inside — there is no grey concrete underneath.

For driveways this matters. A surface coating on concrete can peel, fade under tyre friction, and require re-application every few years. Through-colour oxide concrete needs none of that. It is sealed after the pour to protect the finish, and then it is essentially maintenance-free.

Our Process

How Your Coloured Driveway Gets Built

Four clear stages. One team on site from first dig to handover.

Excavate & Prepare

We remove any existing driveway or surface, excavate to the correct depth, and prepare a compacted sub-base. Council crossover and apron works are handled at this stage if needed.

Form & Prep

Formwork goes in to define the shape and levels. Steel reinforcement is laid. The colour is confirmed before the concrete is ordered — no surprises on pour day.

Colour & Pour

Oxide pigment is batched into the concrete mix so the colour is integral throughout the full slab. The concrete is placed, consolidated and screeded to level.

Finish & Seal

The surface is trowelled or broomed to your chosen texture, then sealed to lock in the colour and protect the finish. We tidy the site and walk you through care instructions at handover.

The cost depends on the area and shape of your driveway, the colour you choose, site access and ground preparation, whether an existing driveway needs removing, crossover works, and any borders or steps included. Coloured concrete made with oxide pigments is highly UV-stable and does not fade the way a surface coating or paint would. The colour is mixed all the way through the slab, so it cannot peel, chip or wash off. Sealing the surface after the pour protects the finish and helps keep the colour looking consistent for years.

The colour goes all the way through the slab. We use iron oxide pigments mixed into the concrete before it is poured, so the colour is integral to the material — not a coating applied on top. That means any chip or crack that does occur shows the same colour inside, not grey concrete underneath.

You can usually walk on the surface within a few days. We recommend waiting a minimum of 10 days before driving a vehicle onto a new coloured concrete driveway. Concrete continues to gain strength after that and reaches full strength at around 28 days.

We work from a broad range of oxide pigment colours — greys, charcoals, earthy tones, warm sandstones and more. At the quote stage we show you physical samples so you can see the actual colour in your light before committing.
