What Is a Warehouse & Factory Floor?

A warehouse or factory floor is a heavy-duty, ground-bearing concrete slab built to carry industrial loads — forklift and vehicle traffic, racking and shelving legs, stored materials and fixed plant. It is designed and reinforced for far higher loads than a residential floor, and the surface finish and flatness are specified to suit how the floor will be used.

Everything is built to the structural engineer's design — slab thickness, reinforcement, concrete grade, joint layout and surface tolerance. On larger floors the slab is poured in planned bays with control joints set out to manage shrinkage and keep the building program moving.

Engineering & Set-out

We work from the structural engineer's plans — confirming slab thickness, reinforcement, concrete grade, joint layout and surface tolerance. The base is prepared and compacted, and the bays and joints are set out before any concrete is booked.

Formwork & Steel

Perimeter and bay formwork is set, and the reinforcing steel is fixed to the engineer's schedule — bar sizes, spacings, laps and cover all to specification. Everything is checked against the drawings before the pour.

Pour, Finish & Cure

Concrete is placed bay by bay, screeded to the specified level and flatness, and finished to the agreed standard. Control joints are saw-cut at the right time and the slab is cured before handover.

Slab thickness is set by the structural engineer based on the loads the floor has to carry — forklift wheel loads, racking leg loads, stored materials and any fixed plant — together with the subgrade strength. Industrial floor slabs are typically thicker and more heavily reinforced than a domestic slab, but there is no single number that applies to every site. We build to the thickness, reinforcement and concrete grade the engineer specifies for your loads.

Large industrial floors are poured in planned bays rather than in one continuous pour, with construction joints and saw-cut control joints set out to manage shrinkage and to let the building program continue around the work. We set out the joint layout and pour sequence to suit the slab design and your site access before any concrete is ordered.
We build to the engineer's design, which accounts for the point loads from racking legs and the dynamic loads from forklift and traffic movements. Surface finish and flatness also matter for forklift and very narrow aisle operation, so we agree the required finish and tolerance up front and pour and screed to it.
