Canterbury-Bankstown is duplex country. More dual-occupancy slabs come out of this LGA than almost anywhere else we pour — wide post-war blocks, an approval pathway people know how to use, and strong demand for the finished product.
It is also a big LGA with genuinely different ground at each end. What works at Chester Hill is not what you will strike at Padstow, and the slab design follows the ground rather than the suburb boundary.
Three distinct ground types sit inside this one LGA — reactive clay in the west, sandstone toward the Georges River in the south, and river flats along the Cooks River in the east.
The western half sits on Wianamatta shale weathering to reactive clay. Moderate to high reactivity is the norm and drives the beam depth and reinforcement on most duplex slabs through here.
Toward the Georges River the ground firms up onto Hawkesbury sandstone and the blocks start falling away to the water. Less reactive, but shallow rock and a cross-fall push the job toward stepped slabs, drop-edge beams or a suspended floor.
The eastern suburbs sit low along the Cooks River, where alluvial soils and historic filling both turn up. Investigation matters here — the fill is rarely uniform and the engineer will design around what the boreholes show.
