Canada Bay is a peninsula LGA, and the water shapes almost everything about the slab work. Blocks fall toward the Parramatta River, foreshore land has been reclaimed and filled, and the highest-value sites are frequently the most difficult ones to build on.
It is also the LGA where we most often end up pouring something other than a slab on ground. Steep harbourside blocks want stepped slabs, drop-edge beams or a suspended floor spanning off piers, and the engineering reflects that well before we quote it.
Shale ridges through the middle of the LGA, reclaimed industrial land along the foreshore, and sandstone on the harbourside slopes — the three could hardly be more different.
The spine of the LGA sits on Ashfield shale weathering to a reactive clay. Moderate to high reactivity is normal, and the slab design follows the movement rather than the load.
Substantial parts of the foreshore were industrial land before they were residential, and much of it was reclaimed and filled. Deep fill, contamination management and piering to competent ground are all part of building here, and the geotechnical investigation is not optional.
The harbourside streets sit on Hawkesbury sandstone and fall hard toward the water. Ground is far less reactive, but shallow rock and cross-fall push the job toward stepped slabs, drop-edge beams or a suspended floor.
These are the conditions we typically strike across Canada Bay — they are not a site classification. Your geotechnical report and structural engineer set the class and the slab design under AS 2870, and we quote and pour to whatever they specify.
