Stamped Concrete Design
Making stamped concrete is a fairly straightforward process. Your concrete driveways, patios, walkways etc. are laid out, formed and poured in the usual manner. After the concrete has been poured, instead of floating a smooth or textured surface, uniquely designed ‘stamps’ are used to create patterns and textures on the finished concrete product. Sometimes, colorants are added to the concrete before the ‘stamping’ to further enhance the stamped concrete design.
The ‘stamps’ that are used in this process can make your concrete look like brick pavers, cobblestones, plank flooring and many others.
When this process was first being used, many looked at it as a simple repeating pattern, and in its infancy, that is basically what it entailed. Using the same stamp pattern over and over. But with a bit of time and evolving technology, today’s stamps are anything but repetitive.

Stamped concrete design and construction is not a ‘do-it-yourself’ project! Stamped Concrete Construction
The construction of a stamped concrete design is quite simple. However, even though it seems easy to produce, it still takes a team of up to 4 experienced concrete finishers to complete.
To create a unique stamped concrete slab, these are the basic steps followed:
- Pour a concrete slab that is at least 100mm thick.
- Add the coloring to the concrete either in the mixing stage or distribute it evenly across the area to be stamped.
- Add the releasing agent so the ‘stamp’ can be removed after it has been firmly planted into the surface.
- Lay out the texturing mats to one area at a time.
- Allow a drying period of at least 24 hours.
- Pressure-wash any remaining releasing agent from the stamped design.
- Apply concrete sealant to protect your investment.
Stamped concrete costs a bit more than a traditional concrete slab pouring project. On average,you can expect to pay anywhere from $170 per m2 up to $240 per m2 . Other factors may cause your stamped concrete to be a bit more or possibly less depending on each different situation.
